PRIVATE CLOUDS

What are they?

Private Clouds are private component networks at Cloudsmith. You can think of them as restricted sections within Cloudsmith's global map.

You start a Private Cloud by seeding it with content - new components you've mapped to Cloudsmith or stacks you've created out of components already in the map. Then you invite others to share it. Everything you (and your collaborators) add to the Private Cloud stays private.

You work with Private Clouds at Cloudsmith the same way you work with other content. The only difference is that your activity is invisible to users who don't have access.

Who uses them & why?

Private Clouds are used by groups of individual developers for lightweight collaboration around a component base.
  • Virtual development teams can use them to collaborate without a central code repository.
  • Developers in a single site can use them to work on a new project without having to set up or maintain a new repository.
  • Consultants can use them to exchange deliverables or training materials with their clients.
  • Software vendors can use them to share products, updates or fixes with customers.

How are they offered?

Private Clouds are offered as a per-developer subscriptions for €25 per year. An annual subscription gives you unlimited use of every Private Cloud you have access to.

It's free to seed a Private Cloud; it is the users you share with who need to subscribe.

ENTERPRISE CLOUDS

What are they?

Enterprise Clouds are private component networks within the boundaries of a development organization. You can think of one as your own extension to Cloudsmith's global map, running on a software appliance on your own server.

Who uses them & why?

Software development often takes place inside a firewall. Developers aren't always allowed to get open source directly from external project sites. This means your organization may use copies of components that Cloudsmith cannot reach. And some developers may even be restricted from using an external web service such as Cloudsmith as part of your development process.
With an Enterprise Cloud, you create a local map of the open source and other assets in use in your organization. Open source assets available at Cloudsmith can be dynamically mirrored inside your firewall through this local map. When you want to create configurations spanning the local map and Cloudsmith's global map, the two maps join transparently. When your developers need to work only with local content, they can work completely off the grid.

How are they offered?

Enterprise Clouds are offered as an annual subscription, priced based on your organization's size. The software appliance that runs your local map is a free download. The subscription covers synchronization between your Enterprise Cloud and Cloudsmith. Each developer accessing your Enterprise Cloud also will need a standard Private Cloud subscription.

COMMUNITY CLOUDS

What are they?

Community Clouds are component networks created and supported by a sponsor - a software vendor, open source project, etc. The community generally (although not necessarily) will be public.

A sponsor seeds the cloud with an initial set of software assets and sets parameters that define a user group. Community members create and share new configurations around that using Cloudsmith. Feeds and statistics allow the sponsor to watch usage activity touching the Cloudsmith map within or across a group.

Who uses them & why?

  • Software vendors can use Community Clouds to gauge community interest in new products by publishing them as stacks and watching how they are consumed.
  • Developer networks can use them to drive growth of user communities around the sponsor's asset base.
  • Open source projects can use them to support commercial ecosystems around the project's core components.

How are they offered?

The community sponsor pays for access to group feeds and statistics through an annual subscription. Assuming that the community is public, access to the cloud is free of charge.
